Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of commencing my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back now, I realize I have experienced a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?

One of the foremost and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This often stands out as one of the most daunting aspects of starting university, and if you are a prospective student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before the semester kicked off, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too fearful to venture out and interact with others. However, today I can assert with confidence that I have formed some of the best friendships I have ever known here at this university and in this program. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I discovered that making an effort to connect at the beginning of the year can be incredibly rewarding. If you feel unsure or hesitant, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events designed to help you engage with fellow students. I also came to understand that authenticity is crucial. With such a diverse range of people across the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who share your values and interests.

Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase in difficulty from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can shake your confidence; you may observe peers studying and feel a sense of inadequacy. A few strategies aided me in navigating this sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can almost assure you there are others who are as well. Therefore, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to learn during the first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and instructors!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty within the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely desire your success and recognize that students encounter various difficulties. They show compassion towards students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. Although I did not fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking risks; I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to build relationships with the staff, which proves to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and this is undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway regarding this aspect of university is to make the most of the support available. There is no limit to how much help you can receive!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be mitigated through the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
