By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt nervous and uncertain about what lay ahead as I embarked on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t something my previously reserved self was familiar with. Reflecting on the last year, I recognize a time rich with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re an upcoming student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to step outside and introduce myself. Today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in like situations. What did I take away from this? It’s beneficial to take a chance at the start of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that authenticity is essential. With such a variety of individuals at the university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the burden of coursework and the difficulty of the material. There was a striking shift from A-levels, and an even larger transition from the first to the second term. Being in such an atmosphere can be taxing on your self-esteem; you might feel insufficient in comparison to others. What supported me was the assurance that everyone is navigating similar waters. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most vital lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out to classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges that students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral assistance until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances previously – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to build rapport with the staff, which is priceless. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the finest things you can do for yourself! My key message is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

All in all, this year has revealed to me that the anxious feelings linked with university are often unfounded and can be eased with the support provided by staff and fellow students. I’ve discovered that I’m never alone and have learned how to find enjoyment even amidst the stress of exams and deadlines.
