Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back, I recognize that it has been a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current state?
One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more fearful elements of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it may be one of your primary worries. On my first day of moving into my dormitory, a few days prior to the semester beginning, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Yet, as I sit here now, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all kicked off with a bit of casual conversation with others experiencing similar situations. So, what was my takeaway? I learned that it’s crucial to take a step forward at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, it should be your true self. There are countless diverse individuals in the course and university; you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.
Another challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an atmosphere can be daunting for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several strategies helped me combat that sentiment, one being the constant reminder that everyone is navigating the same path. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you that there are others who are equally confused. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace in the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This brings me to my next topic. The staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and understand that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I regret that I didn’t take advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I did take one at the year’s onset by becoming a well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s certainly one of the best decisions you can make for your own benefit! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to seize the opportunities for assistance that are presented to you. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has imparted that feelings of nervousness, both leading up to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated through the extensive support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and illustrated how to find enjoyment amid stressors such as exams and deadlines.
