Ten months ago, in October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with self-improvement, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights did this year provide, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more frightening elements of beginning university, and if you’re perusing this as a future student, it may be among your primary concerns. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term kicking off, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to anyone. However, reflecting on it now, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the best bonds I’ve ever had, both at this university and within my degree program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with some casual conversation with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embrace one quality, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the level of workload and the difficulty of the content. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere isn’t always beneficial for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same challenges. If you encounter something you don’t grasp, I can nearly assure you that others also struggle with it. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may very well be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely desire your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They relate to students and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year wellbeing representative. This role provided me the chance to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for your benefit! My main lesson from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support provided. You can never have an excess!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently misplaced and can be mitigated by the various support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
