Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was far from what my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current stance?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forging friendships. This certainly ranks among the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re perusing this as a prospective student, it may be one of your chief worries. On my inaugural day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to others. Yet, as I sit here now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve created a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was initiating casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I discovered that taking a leap at the onset of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also recognized that if you can embody one thing, let it be your true self. With a plethora of diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people like you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an atmosphere isn’t always easy for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies aided me through that sensation, one being the reminder that we are all in the same position. If something doesn’t click, I can almost assure you that there are others who feel the same way. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn during the first year. Reach out for assistance from your peers and the faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had capitalized on it sooner. I mentioned taking leaps at the beginning; I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to build relationships with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and this is undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson from this facet of university is to capitalize on the assistance offered to you. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated by the various support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to enjoy myself while managing stressors like exams and deadlines.
