In October 2022, a mere ten months ago, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was set to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year of personal development, hurdles, and a whole lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of entering university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be a significant worry for you. On the day I moved into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day in my room, too scared to go out and introduce myself. However, today I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in alike situations. So, what did I take away from this? It’s beneficial to take a jump at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities to assist you in connecting with others. I’ve also learned that authenticity is essential. With a multitude of diverse individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a stark contrast from A-levels, and even a greater shift from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can undermine your confidence; you might witness others studying and feel inferior. What supported me was recalling that everyone shares the same experience. If you find something perplexing, it’s likely that others do too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most vital lesson of the first year. Look for support from peers and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I regret not doing so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to bond with staff members, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s among the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the support available. You can never receive too much help!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased with the assistance provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I’m never alone and taught me how to have fun regardless of stressors like exams and deadlines.
