Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and immense fun! So, what insights have I gained, and what’s my status now?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of entering university, and if you’re a prospective student, it could be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my residence, just days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day hiding in my room, too daunted to step outside and meet others. Today, however, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships in my university and course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always a good idea. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breaking and events to help you connect with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, it should be your authentic self. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re bound to find like-minded people.
Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in certain ways, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere isn’t always a boost to your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If something is unclear, I can nearly guarantee that others are in the same boat. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to absorb in the first year. Seek support from your colleagues and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to excel and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They empathize with students and keep consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly advantageous. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance provided. You can never have an excess of help!
In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the various support options accessible from staff and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never alone and how to savor my time despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
