Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of embarking on university life, and if you’re a future student reading this, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On my inaugural day settling into my accommodation, a few days before classes commenced, I remained confined to my room the whole day, too daunted to step out and meet others. Nonetheless, today I can proudly state that I have forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what have I discovered? I realized that taking risks at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also recognized that being authentic is vital. With such a myriad of diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re certain to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was handling the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a significant transition from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even more substantial jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can challenge your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies helped me move past this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to embrace during your first year. Ask for support from classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my following point. The faculty in Materials is remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. They relate to students and maintain ongoing dialogue with us regarding our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously—I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to seize the assistance provided. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has highlighted for me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be alleviated with the support available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never solitary and taught me how to have fun while managing stressors such as exams and deadlines.
