Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh student. Engaging with the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the foremost and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most nerve-wracking aspects of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be your greatest concern. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, mere days before the term commenced, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, I can assertively say that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all initiated by engaging in brief conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I picked up? I’ve realized that taking a step forward at the start of the year is essential. If you’re not prepared or comfortable, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to facilitate your interaction with others. I’ve also come to understand that being authentic is crucial. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter kindred spirits.
Another obstacle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was a significant leap from A-levels, and an even more considerable jump from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can be hard on your self-esteem; you may feel inferior compared to your peers. What assisted me was remembering that everyone faces challenges. If you find something puzzling, others probably do as well. Therefore, seeking assistance is vital. This might be the most important lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for help from fellow students and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to prosper and recognize the challenges students encounter. They are empathetic and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. I talked about taking risks before – I took one by becoming a year wellbeing representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are countless ways to engage with staff, and it’s among the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much!
All in all, this year has enlightened me that apprehensive feelings surrounding university are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the support offered by staff and peers. It has shown me I’m never alone and how to have fun even amid exam pressures and tight deadlines.
