Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt apprehensive and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was just starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh first-year student. Stepping into the unknown was not something my shy and introverted nature was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I perceive a journey filled with personal growth, obstacles, and pleasure. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is often among the most frightening aspects of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might pose a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into my residence, just days ahead of the beginning of classes, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to go out and meet anyone. Now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships here at university and in my studies. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all kicked off with casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? It’s ideal to make that leap early in the year. If you’re not ready or feel uneasy, don’t stress! There are numerous ice-breaker activities designed to help you connect with others. I also learned to embrace my authenticity. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who share your mindset.
An additional challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a noticeable leap from A-levels, and an even more significant transition from the first to the second term. Being in such an atmosphere can impact your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was the realization that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If something is unclear to you, it’s very likely others are struggling as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson of the first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and maintain ongoing communication about our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the support services until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I talked about taking leaps previously – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position helped me connect with faculty members, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to get to know the faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My key takeaway is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have an excess of support!
In summary, this year has illustrated that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the support accessible from staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never truly alone and has taught me how to enjoy my time despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
