A decade ago, in October 2022, I experienced a whirlwind of nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights did this year provide me, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be among your greatest concerns. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the semester starting, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here at this moment, I can assertively say I have forged some of the finest friendships I have ever known at this university and in this program. I have found a second family here at Imperial, beginning with some casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I conclude? I realized that taking a leap of faith at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, there’s no need to worry! Numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events will assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that being true to yourself is essential. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

An additional challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a clear enhancement from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is in a similar situation. If you struggle to comprehend something, I can nearly assure you that others do too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They relate to students and keep in regular contact with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I did not make full use of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by serving as a year wellbeing representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are many opportunities to get acquainted with staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My main takeaway from this facet of university is to leverage the assistance you’re provided. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the array of support available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to have fun despite stressors like exams and deadlines.
