By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was preparing to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy self was used to. In retrospect, I can see a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what has this past year illuminated for me, and where do I stand now?
One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This can indeed be one of the most nerve-wracking aspects of commencing university, and for those considering enrollment, it may pose a significant worry. On my first day settling into my residence, a few days ahead of the term’s start, I remained ensconced in my room all day, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it began with light conversations with individuals in comparable circumstances. So, what lesson did I draw from this? I learned that taking the initial leap at the beginning of the year is crucial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fear not! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events to facilitate your connection with others. I’ve also learned the importance of being yourself. With such a diverse range of people in the course and university, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the difficulty of the content. There was undoubtedly a shift from A-levels, and an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being in such an atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and experience feelings of inadequacy. Some strategies helped me navigate through these challenges, one being the realization that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you find something perplexing, others likely are as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may be the most vital lesson to absorb in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the staff for assistance!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They are genuinely invested in your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain open lines of communication regarding our challenges. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support system until the year’s end, but I wish I had availed myself of it sooner. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which holds immense value. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this segment of university life is to maximize the support available. You can never have too much assistance!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated with the support offered by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment despite challenges such as exams and deadlines.
