Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed by anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted nature was equipped for. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! So, what lessons did this year impart, and where do I find myself now?
One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is undeniably one of the more frightening components of commencing university, and if you’re a future student, it could be one of your greatest worries. On my initial day of moving into my residence, just before the term commenced, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. Yet, as I sit here today, I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, both at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all beginning with some casual conversations with those in identical situations. So, what did I learn? I discovered that taking a risk at the start of the year is crucial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, it’s to be yourself. With the wide variety of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people like you.
Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in many ways, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment isn’t always easy on your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel less capable. Several things helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, I can almost assure you that there are others who are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to take away from your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are phenomenal. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They relate to students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year was nearly over, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke about taking chances earlier – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My key takeaway regarding this facet of university is to make the most of the assistance available. There’s no such thing as having too much help!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated through the various support avenues provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
