Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious and uncertain as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing something unfamiliar was not characteristic of my formerly shy nature. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize the growth, obstacles, and enjoyment I’ve experienced. What insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the first hurdles was forming friendships, a daunting task when beginning university. If you’re an incoming student, this may concern you as well. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, I remained in my room the whole time, too apprehensive to engage with others. Now, I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the strongest friendships here, establishing a second family at Imperial. It all began with casual conversations with others facing similar situations. I discovered that taking the plunge early in the year can be advantageous. If you’re not quite ready, fear not—there are numerous ice-breaking activities available to help you connect. Just be yourself, and you’ll find your tribe.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. I noticed a significant leap from A-levels, with an even steeper rise from the first to the second term. This environment can shake your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and feel inadequate. Keep in mind that everyone is experiencing the same struggle. If you don’t grasp a concept, chances are others don’t either. Seeking assistance is vital during the first year. Reach out to your peers and instructors!

The faculty in the Materials department is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and resonate with student challenges. They keep in touch with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. Although I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. I took the initiative to become a well-being representative, which allowed me to connect with staff—an invaluable experience. There are several opportunities to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best choices you can make. Embrace the support available; there’s always room for more!

This year has taught me that the apprehensive feelings about university are frequently baseless and can be alleviated with support from both staff and fellow students. I’ve realized I am never truly alone and how to find joy even amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
