Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of embarking on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year abundant with personal development, obstacles, and immense enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided me, and where do I find myself at this point?

One of the earliest and most daunting hurdles was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more intimidating components of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be one of your primary worries. On my first day of moving into my residence, just days before classes began, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, today I can proudly state that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships during my time at university and in my program. I’ve established a second family at Imperial, all of which began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not quite prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate your connections with others. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. With so many varied people across the program and university, you are bound to encounter individuals like yourself.

Another challenge involved balancing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase compared to A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can challenge your self-assurance; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate this sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is in the same boat. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that others share the same confusion. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to absorb in the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. They sympathize with students and maintain open communication throughout the year about our issues. I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had leveraged it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I took one at the onset of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it is one of the best things you can do for your growth! My primary takeaway from this element of university life is to seize the assistance available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nerves, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased by the various support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never solitary and how to find enjoyment despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
