Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about the future. I was embarking on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was something my previously bashful self was not used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening parts of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a significant worry. On my first day of moving into my dormitory, just days ahead of classes starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet people. Now, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships at the university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with others in the same boat. So, what did I take away from this? It’s best to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be a myriad of ice-breaking events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse array of people across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded individuals.
Another obstacle was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a significant leap from A-levels, and an even bigger leap from the first to the second term. Being in such an atmosphere can challenge your self-assurance; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. What aided me was remembering that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If something isn’t clear, others likely feel the same way. So, do ask for assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson in the freshman year. Seek support from peers and faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They empathize and maintain dialogue with us throughout the year. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I talked about taking chances before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to get acquainted with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway is to take full advantage of the assistance available. You can never have an excess of support!
In conclusion, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased with the backing available from faculty and fellow students. It has illustrated to me that I’m never alone and has shown me how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
