Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about the future. I was preparing to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of fun! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This can be one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re a future student, it might weigh heavily on your mind. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, just days before term started, I spent the whole day in my room, feeling too anxious to venture out and meet new people. Now, I can proudly say I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships during my time at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all kicked off with casual conversations with others in similar situations. What did I discover? It’s essential to take the plunge at the beginning of the year. If you aren’t ready or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to assist you in connecting with fellow students. Additionally, if you can be anything, be authentic. With the plethora of diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re bound to meet those who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a noticeable leap from A-levels, and an even larger leap from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can put your confidence to the test; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What supported me was the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you don’t grasp something, I assure you others are in the same position. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most vital lesson to absorb in your first year. Reach out for assistance from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the academic year. I didn’t make use of the pastoral support until the year was nearly over, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I made one by stepping up as a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the most rewarding actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway is to utilize the assistance offered. You can never receive too much!
In summary, this year enlightened me that anxieties surrounding university are frequently misplaced and can be alleviated by the support provided by staff and students. It taught me that I’m never alone and how to find joy even amid stressors like exams and due dates.
