Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I can see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current state?
One of the primary and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting facets of starting university, and if you’re a future student, it might be among your chief concerns. On my first day settling into my residence, just days before the term kicked off, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too scared to venture out and meet others. Yet today, I can proudly say I’ve created some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this institution and in this program. I’ve established a second family at Imperial, initiated by simple conversations with individuals in similar predicaments. So, what did I come to understand? I learned that taking a risk at the outset of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fear not! There will be many ice-breaking opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can be anything, just be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you will surely find those who resonate with you.
A further challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly an increased level compared to A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me during that time, one being the realization that everyone is facing similar challenges. If a concept is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that others share your confusion. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for support from both your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They show compassion towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, which I now regret. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to bond with the faculty members, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to connect with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the available assistance. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be diminished through the various support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has enlightened me that I’m never truly alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
