Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I experienced a whirlwind of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into uncharted territory was not something my formerly timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the most significant and intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This often represents one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re viewing this as a potential student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. Today, I proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships here at this institution and in my program. I’ve established a second family at Imperial, and everything began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what’s the takeaway? I discovered that taking bold steps at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not yet prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample social events to facilitate connections with others. I also found that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals in the course and university, you are guaranteed to encounter those who resonate with your personality.
Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a significant transition from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more considerable jump from the first term to the second. Being in a such challenging environment can shake your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. A few strategies assisted me through this phase, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you that others are grappling with it too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to internalize in your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and professors!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges that students encounter. They show understanding and maintain ongoing communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, yet I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I made one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to establish relationships with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary lesson is to take full advantage of the available assistance. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has imparted to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I’m never isolated and has taught me how to find enjoyment in life despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
