Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and countless enjoyable moments! But what insights have I gained this year, and what’s my current standing?

One of the foremost and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most nerve-wracking elements of beginning university, and for any aspiring student reading this, it might be among your greatest worries. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days before classes kicked off, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, I can say with confidence that I’ve made some of the finest friends here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all commencing from casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what lessons did I acquire? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There are plenty of ice-breaker events designed to help you bond with others. I also learned that being true to yourself is essential. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to connect with those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly an elevation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being surrounded by such an environment can test your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few factors aided me during this time, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly guarantee that others are in the same boat. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year. Look for support from your peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely desire for you to prosper and comprehend the challenges faced by students. They resonate with our experiences and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had tapped into it earlier. I mentioned previously about taking leaps – at the beginning of the year, I took a leap by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to bond with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the help that’s available. You can never have too much backing!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are typically unfounded and can be mitigated with the various support resources accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I’m never truly alone and has taught me how to find joy despite stressors like exams and deadlines.
