Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not a realm my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?
One of the foremost and most challenging hurdles was establishing friendships. This is frequently one of the most intimidating aspects of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry. On my inaugural day moving into my residence, a few days prior to classes commencing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to emerge and meet others. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, starting with casual conversations with those in similar circumstances. So, what have I concluded? It’s ideal to take a plunge at the beginning of the year. If you’re not yet prepared or at ease, fret not! There are countless ice-breaking events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized the importance of being authentic. With such a diverse array of people throughout the program and university, you’ll definitely find individuals who share your mindset.
Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was a striking increase from A-levels, and an even greater transition from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can undermine your confidence; observing others study might lead you to feel insufficient. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, it’s likely that others are encountering the same issue. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson of the first year. Reach out for help from peers and faculty!
This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and maintain ongoing communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully embrace the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position provided an opportunity to connect with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s among the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway is to fully utilize the support available. There’s no such thing as too much!
In summary, this year has illustrated that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often misplaced and can be mitigated through the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I am never alone and how to derive enjoyment from my experiences despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
