Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year full of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what have I discovered, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you are a prospective student, it could be one of your greatest concerns. On the day I moved into my accommodation, a few days before the term kicked off, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, today I can proudly say that I have made some of the best friendships here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar positions. So, what did I glean from this? It’s always advantageous to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t stress! Numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities will arise to help you bond with others. I also learned that authenticity is essential. With so many diverse individuals in the program and within the university, you are sure to encounter people who share your interests.

Another obstacle was the sheer volume of coursework and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a significant transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a setting can shake your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel less competent. A few things assisted me in overcoming this sensation, one of which was the realization that everyone shares the same experience. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you that others don’t either. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Seek help from classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and keep in regular contact with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the supportive services until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking risks – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are countless ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most rewarding steps you can take for yourself! My primary insight from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have an excess of it!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both preceding and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated by the support systems offered by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment while navigating the pressures of exams and deadlines.
