Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more fearsome elements of starting university, and if you’re encountering this as an incoming student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too scared to venture out and meet others. Today, in contrast, I can assertively state that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, beginning with casual conversations with others in similar positions. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events designed to foster connections. I also realized that if you could embody any quality, let it be authenticity. With a plethora of diverse individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
A further challenge was coping with the workload and difficulty of the material. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more substantial leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can challenge your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A couple of things assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the recollection that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that many others share that confusion. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The members of the Materials staff are phenomenal. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards students and keep up consistent communication with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until late in the year, but I regret not doing it earlier. I mentioned taking chances previously – I embraced one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role provided me the opportunity to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undeniably one of the best decisions you can make for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to utilize the assistance you’re given. You can never have an excess of support!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of apprehension, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated with the myriad support options available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never solitary, and it has demonstrated how to enjoy myself amidst challenges such as exams and deadlines.
