Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the early and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most intimidating elements of beginning university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the commencement of classes, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to venture out and interact with others. Today, I can proudly state that I’ve made some of the best friends at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. What did I discover? It’s important to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaking events designed to facilitate connections with others. Additionally, be authentic. With a myriad of diverse individuals at the university, you are certain to find those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the level of difficulty of the content. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and an even larger leap from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can test your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Remember, everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to understand something, it’s likely that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson from the first year. Reach out for support from classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The staff in the Materials department are amazing. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They relate and keep open lines of communication regarding our issues. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke about taking chances previously – I took one by becoming a representative for year well-being. This position enabled me to connect with staff members, which is priceless. There are various ways to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary takeaway is to fully utilize the support available. You can never have too much assistance!
Ultimately, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated with the support from staff and fellow students. I’ve learned that I am never alone and how to find joy despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
