By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh student. Diving into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what have I discovered, and what is my current status?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On the day I moved into my residence, just a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can state with assurance that I’ve established some of the finest friendships here at the university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. What did I gain? It’s advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or feeling at ease, don’t stress! There are numerous ice-breaking events designed to assist you in connecting with others. Additionally, embrace your true self. With such a diverse population at the university, you are bound to find those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a noticeable escalation from A-levels, and an even greater jump from the first semester to the second. Being in such an atmosphere can impact your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. A few strategies aided me during this time, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, there are likely others who feel the same way. So, seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges students face. They show compassion and keep in regular contact with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. I mentioned taking risks – I took one by stepping into the role of a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to familiarize myself with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary message is to capitalize on the support available. You can never have too much assistance!
In conclusion, this year has taught me that feelings of apprehension regarding university are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated with the support from staff and fellow students. It has illustrated that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst the stress of examinations and deadlines.
