Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This can be one of the most daunting aspects of starting university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it might be one of your primary worries. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the semester’s start, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to step out and introduce myself to others. Sitting here today, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all began with initiating small conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what have I learned? I’ve come to understand that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is beneficial. If you’re not quite ready or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker activities and events will be available to help you connect with others. I’ve also realized that if you can be anything, be yourself. With such a variety of individuals across the course and university, you’re certain to find others who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and complexity of the material. There was certainly an increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can sometimes be challenging for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. A few aspects aided me through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar experiences. If something is unclear to you, I can virtually guarantee that others are equally perplexed. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the staff!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They relate to students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps previously – I made one at the year’s onset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this dimension of university life is to capitalize on the assistance offered. You can never have an excess of support!

In summary, this year has illuminated for me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased through the various support avenues available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to have fun even amid stressors like exams and deadlines.
