Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is often a daunting part of beginning university, and if you are reading this as a future student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just days before classes started, I spent the whole day in my room, too scared to step out and meet others. Today, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with casual chats with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I come to understand? I learned that it’s crucial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t be concerned! There will be countless ice-breaker chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if you can embody anything, be yourself. With such a diverse group of people throughout the course and university, you are likely to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an atmosphere isn’t always kind to your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A couple of things supported me through that feeling, one being the acknowledgment that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re puzzled by something, I can almost assure you that others are too. So, seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to take away during your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The staff in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely want you to succeed and comprehend that students face difficulties. They show understanding towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the academic year concluded, but I wish I had availed myself of it earlier. I spoke of taking leaps before – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and this is certainly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this element of university life is to make the most of the assistance provided. You can never have too much!

Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
