Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and ample fun! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was making friends. This is often one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you are a prospective student, it might be a significant concern for you. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term commencing, I spent the whole day in my room, too intimidated to step out and socialize. Sitting here now, I can assertively state that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all of which commenced with casual conversations with others in similar predicaments. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t be concerned! There will be countless ice-breaker events designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that authenticity is crucial. With such a diverse group of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.
Another challenge I faced was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undeniably a jump from A-levels, and an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several strategies helped me navigate this, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar situations. If you find something difficult to understand, I can nearly guarantee that others are struggling too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are incredible. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students face challenges. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps – I took a significant one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the available assistance. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
