Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what awaited me as I prepared to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a period filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a major worry. On my first day settling into my accommodation, I spent the full day in my room, overwhelmed by the idea of meeting new faces. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all originated from casual conversations with others experiencing similar feelings. What did I realize? It’s beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling hesitant, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker activities designed to help you meet others. Additionally, be authentic. With such a diverse group of people, you’re sure to connect with those who share your values.

An additional obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a notable increase from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might find yourself feeling less capable compared to your peers. Keep in mind, everyone is experiencing similar feelings. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely that others are also struggling. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might just be the most vital lesson from the first year. Reach out to classmates and faculty!

The faculty in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges that students encounter. They show empathy and maintain ongoing dialogue with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until the year was almost over, but I wish I had sought it earlier. I mentioned taking risks – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which has proven invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial steps you can take for your own well-being! My primary takeaway is to fully utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

This year has shown me that feelings of nervousness regarding university are frequently baseless and can be eased with the assistance available from both staff and fellow students. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone and how to have fun even in the face of exam pressures and deadlines.
