Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize this past year as one filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This can be one of the most frightening parts of commencing university, and if you are reading this as a future student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my inaugural day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too fearful to step out and meet others. However, today I can proudly assert that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve formed a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with some casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? I learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the year always pays off. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that being authentic is the best strategy. With such a wide array of diverse individuals across the program and university, you are sure to encounter people who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in certain ways, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel out of place. A couple of things aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is in a similar boat. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that there are others who are equally puzzled. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial skill to cultivate in the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students contend with. They show understanding towards students and keep in constant contact with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had engaged with it sooner. I spoke about taking leaps earlier – I took one at the year’s onset by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it is undeniably one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have an excess of support!
In summary, this year has shown me that anxiety, both prior to and during university, is frequently unfounded and can be mitigated through the various support resources offered by staff and fellow students. It has illuminated the fact that I am never alone and has taught me how to find joy despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
