Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously introverted and quiet self was used to. Looking back now, I realize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and fun experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This tends to be one of the most frightening parts of entering university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may pose a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term’s start, I spent the whole day in my room, too shy to venture out and meet new people. However, today, I can proudly say I have formed some of the closest friendships at university and within my course. I have discovered a second family here at Imperial, which all began with casual conversations with others in similar positions. So, what did I discover? I found that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to assist you in connecting with peers. I also realized that being authentic is vital. With so many diverse individuals in the course and the university, you are sure to meet like-minded people.
Another challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a significant increase compared to A-levels, and an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Navigating such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate in comparison. A few factors aided me during this period; one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you encounter a concept you don’t grasp, I can almost assure you that others are grappling with it too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson during your first year. Reach out to both peers and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students endure. They show understanding and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our difficulties. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I spoke about taking risks before—I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with the faculty, and it is one of the best decisions you can make for your personal growth! My main conclusion is to leverage the support available. There is no such thing as too much!
In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehensive feelings before and during university are often unfounded and can be mitigated through the support provided by faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never alone and taught me how to find enjoyment despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
