Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not a situation my previously timid self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the early and most formidable challenges was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most intimidating aspects of commencing university, and if you are a prospective student, it may be a significant worry. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day in my room, too afraid to go out and introduce myself. Today, I can confidently state that I’ve made some of the finest friends here at university and in my course. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away? It’s wise to take a plunge at the beginning of the year. If you’re not ready or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse population at the university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded individuals.

Another hurdle was the academic workload and difficulty of content. There was a significant increase from A-levels, and an even more considerable jump from the first term to the second. Being in such an atmosphere can be challenging for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. What assisted me was the reminder that everyone is navigating the same waters. If you’re struggling to grasp something, others probably are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson during the first year. Reach out for help from peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and keep communication open throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is priceless. There are various methods to engage with faculty, and it’s among the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year taught me that apprehensive feelings about university are often baseless and can be mitigated with the support provided by staff and fellow students. It made me realize that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
