Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Delving into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and introverted self was used to. In retrospect, I recognize a year full of personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current standing?
One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more fearsome aspects of beginning university, and for those of you reading this as potential students, it may be one of your largest worries. On my initial day of moving into dorms, a few days before the semester kicked off, I remained in my room all day, too daunted to step out and meet others. However, today I am pleased to report that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known, here at this institution and within this program. I’ve established a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with some casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I gleaned? I’ve learned that making an initial effort at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. With such a wide range of individuals throughout the program and campus, you’re bound to encounter like-minded peers.
Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some instances, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can be a strain on your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me overcome that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you others don’t either. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year. Seek support from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The instructors in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They connect with students and keep in touch throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had started earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is incredibly useful. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to leverage the support available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has imparted to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the extensive support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and has taught me how to have fun despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
