Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was preparing to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often one of the most daunting parts of starting university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be a significant concern for you. On my first day moving into my dorm, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered an additional family at Imperial, and it all kicked off with casual conversations with others in similar situations. What did I discover? It’s important to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to help you connect with fellow students. I also learned to embrace my true self. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to find those who share your interests.
Another obstacle was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a noticeable shift from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Existing in such an atmosphere can impact your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What assisted me was recalling that everyone is on the same journey. If you don’t grasp something, chances are others don’t, either. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson during the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from peers and faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are genuinely invested in your success and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and maintain consistent communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I talked about taking leaps – I took a significant one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to build relationships with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it is one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson is to maximize the help available. There’s no such thing as too much!
Ultimately, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often irrational and can be eased with the support provided by faculty and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I am never alone and taught me how to find joy amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
