Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and unsure about the future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Engaging with the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?

One of the primary and most daunting obstacles was forming friendships. This certainly ranks as one of the more intimidating elements of embarking on university life, and if you are perusing this as a potential student, it could be one of your major worries. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the term kicking off, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room because I felt too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this institution and in this program. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with engaging in casual conversation with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s always best to take a gamble at the onset of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking occasions and events to facilitate connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one quality, be genuine. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re certain to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly an escalation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always conducive to bolstering your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation as you. If something isn’t clear, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others who also find it perplexing. So, seek assistance. This may very well be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for support from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are ample avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to capitalize on the assistance offered to you. You can never have an excess!

In summary, this year has imparted the lesson that apprehensive feelings, both prior to and during university, are nearly always baseless and can be mitigated by the myriad support resources accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never isolated, and it has demonstrated how to find enjoyment alongside stressors such as exams and deadlines.
