By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future as I prepared to embark on my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a first-year student. Diving into the unknown was not something my formerly timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back at the previous academic year, I recognize it as a time rich in personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?
One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re a potential student reading this, it might be among your primary worries. On my first day settling into my new place, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. However, as I sit here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve cultivated some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever experienced during my time at this university and in this course. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always a good idea. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, that’s perfectly fine! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breakers and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if there is one thing to be, it’s yourself. With a diverse array of individuals at the course and university, you are likely to encounter like-minded people.
Another challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some instances, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can sometimes shake your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors helped me navigate through that sentiment, one being the understanding that everyone shares the same experience. If there’s something you don’t grasp, I can almost assure you that at least a few others share that confusion. So, seek assistance. This may be the paramount lesson to embrace during the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year about our challenges. Although I didn’t fully utilize the available support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with faculty members, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best moves you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the help that’s offered to you. You can never have too much support!
Overall, this year has informed me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are almost always unfounded and can be mitigated through the numerous support options provided by the faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
