Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxieties, fears, and uncertainties regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into unfamiliar territory was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back on the last academic year, I view it as a phase of personal development, obstacles, and immense enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my inaugural day moving into my residence, just days prior to the term kicking off, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Yet, as I sit here today, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all of which began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that it is always advisable to take a plunge at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker opportunities and activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can be anything, simply be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and institution, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly an increase compared to A-levels, and in certain respects, an even steeper transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can challenge your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few aspects aided me in navigating that feeling, one of which was the reminder that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that others are also grappling with it. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may very well be the most important skill to cultivate in the first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!

That leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are amazing. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to become acquainted with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and it is unequivocally one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the support available. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated with the various support options available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and has taught me how to find joy despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
