Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a new student. Immersing myself in the unknown wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This often ranks as one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you are reading this as an incoming student, it might top your list of worries. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term commencing, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to fellow students. Yet, reflecting from this moment, I can enthusiastically proclaim that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you aren’t feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker activities and events will be available to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse group of people throughout the course and university, chances are you’ll meet individuals who resonate with you.

A further challenge I encountered was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment isn’t always beneficial for your self-esteem; you might observe others engrossed in studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that feeling, one being the realization that everyone is experiencing the same situation. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that there are others who share the same confusion. So, reach out for assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Seek support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand that students face challenges. They empathize with our struggles and maintain ongoing communication with us regarding our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking risks before – I did take one at the beginning of the year by assuming the role of a year well-being representative. This opportunity enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are many avenues to engage with the faculty, and it is undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this area of university life is to seize the support available. You can never have too much!

To sum it up, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased by the various support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated and how to find enjoyment amid stressors like exams and deadlines.
