Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re a future student, it may be one of your greatest concerns. On my inaugural day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of classes, I remained in my room the whole day, too apprehensive to venture out and socialize. Today, I can assertively say that I have made some of the finest friends here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? It’s wise to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you aren’t prepared or feel uncomfortable, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse community at the university, you’re bound to find people who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the rigorous workload and the complexity of the material. There was a distinct leap from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. What aided me was recalling that everyone is navigating the same circumstances. If you don’t grasp something, chances are others don’t either. Therefore, ask for assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson of the first year. Seek help from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and keep in touch with us throughout the year. I didn’t access pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking risks – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous methods to engage with staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson is to utilize the support available. You can never have an excess of it!
In summary, this year has illuminated the fact that apprehensions about university are frequently baseless and can be alleviated with the support that staff and fellow students provide. It’s demonstrated to me that I’m never alone and has taught me how to relish my time despite the stress from exams and deadlines.
