Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and reserved nature was prepared for. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and for prospective students, it may pose a significant worry. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just days before the term started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to step out and greet others. However, I can now proudly state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this course. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with those in similar circumstances. So, what did I uncover? I discovered that taking the initiative at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, there’s no need for concern! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breaking and events designed to help you engage with others. I also realized that above all else, you should be authentic. With such a diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of content. There was undoubtedly a significant increase from A-levels, and in many ways, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. What helped me overcome that sensation was the reassurance that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you that others do too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking risks – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key lesson from this facet of university life is to take full advantage of the assistance available. There’s no such thing as too much support!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never isolated, and has illustrated how to enjoy my time even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
