Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was set to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening elements of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be your top concern. On my initial day of moving into my dorm, just days ahead of the semester beginning, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too intimidated to venture out and meet new people. However, today, I can confidently affirm that I have forged some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, beginning with casual conversations with those in similar circumstances. So, what was my takeaway? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not yet prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be a multitude of ice-breaker activities designed to help you engage with others. I also learned the importance of being true to yourself. With so many diverse individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.
Another difficulty was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was a distinct increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something confuses you, I can almost assure you others are struggling with it as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most significant lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for support from both peers and staff!
This leads me to my next point. The staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and understand the hurdles students encounter. They empathize and maintain consistent communication about our concerns throughout the academic year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had made use of it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is priceless. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary insight is to seize the assistance available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased by the support provided by staff and fellow students. It taught me that I’m never truly alone and how to have fun despite stressors like exams and deadlines.
