By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I had just begun my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my once shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current position?
One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This commonly ranks as one of the most frightening elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a major worry. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of classes starting, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too daunted to venture out and socialize. However, today, I can assertively state that I’ve made some of the best friends I’ve ever known here at this university and within this program. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with some casual conversations with others in similar positions. So, what have I discovered? I learned that it’s wise to take a risk at the beginning of the academic year. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if there is one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded people.
Another obstacle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. It was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can challenge your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several strategies aided me during that time, one being the understanding that everyone shares the same struggles. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can nearly guarantee that others do not either. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your initial year. Reach out for support from fellow students and the faculty!
This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are phenomenal. They genuinely want to see you thrive and understand that students face challenges. They empathize with us and engage in consistent communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year was almost over, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I took one at the year’s outset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are various opportunities to engage with staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary conclusion from this university aspect is to take full advantage of the support available. You can never have too much assistance!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased with the numerous support resources offered by staff and fellow students. It has enlightened me that I am never alone, and it has demonstrated how to find joy even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
