Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into unfamiliar territory was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyable moments! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This aspect is often one of the most daunting when beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too scared to venture out and introduce myself. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? It’s wise to take the plunge at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to assist in connecting with others. Also, just be yourself. With such a diverse population at the university, you’re sure to find those who share your interests.
Another hurdle was the amount of work and the complexity of the material. There was definitely a noticeable increase from A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first to the second term. Being in such a demanding environment can impact your self-esteem; you might feel less competent compared to peers. What helped me was keeping in mind that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something difficult, chances are others do too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This could be the most vital lesson from the first year. Look for support from both fellow students and faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely wish for you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. They are understanding and maintain open communication throughout the year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later, but I wish I had started earlier. I mentioned taking risks; I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with staff members, which is invaluable. There are numerous methods to get acquainted with the faculty, and it is among the best actions you can take! My key takeaway is to make the most of the assistance provided. You can never have too much support!
All in all, this year has demonstrated to me that the anxieties surrounding pre-university life are often baseless and can be alleviated with the backing of staff and fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
