Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and withdrawn self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and immense enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect of beginning university often ranks among the most daunting, and if you are a prospective student reading this, it may be your main worry. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, daunted by the idea of venturing out and introducing myself. However, today I can proudly assert that I have forged some of the most meaningful friendships here at university and within my course. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, starting with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I found that making a bold move at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel quite ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker chances and events designed to help you connect with others. I also realized that being true to yourself is essential. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and the university, you are sure to encounter those who align with you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and in some instances, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being suddenly immersed in such an environment can challenge your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel out of place. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming this sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same situation. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that others are as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This could be the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year. Reach out to your fellow students and the staff!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is fantastic. They genuinely wish for your success and understand the challenges students encounter. They connect with us and maintain open lines of communication regarding our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral resources until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned making bold moves previously – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to build relationships with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the finest choices you can make for yourself! My main lesson from this aspect of university is to seize the assistance provided. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated by the support mechanisms available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to have fun despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
