Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and doubt about the future. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with academic development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons have I taken from this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting facets of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might rank as one of your largest worries. On my first day relocating to my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to anyone. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve cultivated a second family at Imperial, all initiated through casual chats with those in similar situations. So, what did I come to understand? I discovered that it’s wise to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel quite ready or at ease, fret not! There will be plenty of ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody one quality, be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase compared to A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always conducive to your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel less than capable. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone shares this experience. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly promise that it’s unclear to others as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the single most critical lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us all year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I regret not utilizing it earlier. I previously mentioned the need to take leaps – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s unquestionably one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the opportunities for assistance available. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased with the ample support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never alone, and it’s revealed how to find joy even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
