Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead as I was set to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Engaging with the unfamiliar was not something my once reticent self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and enjoyable moments. But what have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the foremost and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is frequently a significant worry for freshmen. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, I remained in my room all day, too fearful to step outside and meet others. Now, I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the most amazing friendships here, creating a second family at Imperial. It all began with casual conversations with others in comparable situations. I discovered it’s most effective to take a risk at the start of the year. If you’re unprepared, don’t fret—there will be a multitude of ice-breaker gatherings to aid you in connecting with others. Be authentic, and you’ll discover like-minded individuals.
An additional obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a noticeable transition from A-level studies, and an even more significant jump from the first to the second term. It’s easy to second-guess yourself when observing others studying, but keep in mind that everyone is in the same circumstances. If you don’t comprehend something, chances are others are struggling too. Therefore, seek assistance. This is vital in the first year—reach out for help from peers and faculty!
The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want students to thrive and acknowledge the challenges we encounter. They keep an open line of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I took a step by becoming a well-being representative for my year, which helped me connect with faculty members. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself. Make the most of the support available—you can never have enough!
This year has shown me that anxieties regarding university are frequently baseless and can be mitigated through the assistance provided by staff and fellow students. I’ve realized I am never alone and have learned to find joy amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
