By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. As I was preparing to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresher, stepping into the unfamiliar was not something my previous introverted nature embraced. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and it may be your primary worry if you’re a prospective student. On my initial day of moving into my new place just days ahead of the semester, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to step out and introduce myself. Yet today, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most incredible friendships here at this institution and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with simple conversations with others who were going through similar experiences. So, what have I discovered? I learned it’s advantageous to take the plunge at the year’s start. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, that’s completely fine! There will be ample ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to help you engage with others. I also discovered that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse array of individuals in the program and the university, you are sure to encounter those who share your interests.

An additional challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a shift from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even more significant leap from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can undermine your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate by comparison. A few strategies assisted me during this time, one being the reminder that everyone faces similar challenges. If you’re struggling with something, you can almost bet that others are having difficulty, too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson of the first year: reach out for help from fellow students and faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely wish for your success and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and keep lines of communication open with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had accessed it earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to leverage the support available. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has illuminated the fact that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased with the support resources offered by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to savor my experience, despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
