Ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious, afraid, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and reserved nature was used to. Looking back, I recognize an academic year rich with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! However, what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most formidable hurdles was making connections. This is certainly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it might be one of your primary worries. On the day I moved into my accommodation, a few days before classes started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too intimidated to venture out and introduce myself to fellow students. Yet today, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with striking up casual conversations with others facing similar circumstances. So, what was my takeaway? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker sessions and activities to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one quality, be true to yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals in the program and the university, you are sure to find like-minded people.

A further challenge involved the workload and the complexity of the material. It was undoubtedly a step up from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into this environment can sometimes be a blow to your confidence; you might notice others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors assisted me in overcoming this sentiment, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others who also don’t get it. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Seek help from your peers and instructors!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. Their desire for your success is evident, and they understand that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and keep open lines of communication throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so sooner. I mentioned taking chances earlier – I took one at the year’s beginning by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for your own benefit! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased by the various support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated how to find enjoyment alongside stressors such as exams and deadlines.
