Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of embarking on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was accustomed to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a period filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what have I gained from this year, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you’re an aspiring student reading this, it may be one of your greatest concerns. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, just days before the term commenced, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too afraid to venture out and meet others. Sitting here now, I can boldly state that I’ve made some of the greatest friends I’ve ever encountered at this university and in this program. I’ve created a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I’ve learned that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking chances and events to help you connect with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be yourself. With such a diverse crowd across the program and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was managing the workload and content complexity. There was certainly a jump from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always easy for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same path. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that others don’t either. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

That brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy towards us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our difficulties. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it is undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to make the most of the available assistance. You can never have too much!

All in all, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated by the various support resources offered by staff and fellow students. It has illuminated the fact that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
