Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unknown was not something my introverted and reserved nature was used to. Reflecting back, I recognize a year rich with personal growth, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most nerve-racking trials was forging friendships. This aspect of beginning university can be quite intimidating, and for prospective students, it could be a significant worry. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just a few days ahead of the semester, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and socialize. Today, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this course. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. I discovered that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is ideal. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking chances and activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned the importance of being authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was handling the workload and complexity of the content. The transition from A-levels was noticeable, and an even larger leap occurred from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can test your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and begin to feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me overcome that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something confusing, there are likely others who feel the same way. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to absorb in the first year. Reach out to both peers and staff for support!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They are genuinely invested in your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They relate to students and maintain open lines of communication regarding our challenges. I only took advantage of the pastoral support towards the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I spoke of taking chances – I made one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to cultivate relationships with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous steps you can take for your own benefit! My primary takeaway is to leverage the support available. There’s never too much help!
Ultimately, this year enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are usually baseless and can be mitigated through the support systems offered by faculty and fellow students. It taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
